It is almost miraculous, the sudden transformative effect it can have on us. We often take them to grave sooner rather than later unless we decide to be open and share our secrets with another person. Shameful secrets can fester in the dark recesses of our minds and inflame our hearts with recrimination and resentment.
I was reading last night in I Peter about living in a way that my prayers are not be hindered. And the book by Chuck C , A New Pair of Glasses, defining the SM as a feeling of consciously separated from God. I could identify when he went on to say, “the spiritual malady refers to a derangement of our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. These things are out of whack and not aligned.“ The process of recovery is useful to remedy this problem. One of the key features of addiction is the loss of control. No one wakes up one day and says, “I want to be an addict” – that’s absurd. That was certainly not my case in my alcoholism or the other forms of addiction that I have experienced over my lifetime.
Tap into your inner source of power and keep moving forward
Simply go to your internet browser and type in “grief counseling” and you will find many options. In steps 4 and 5 we listed wrongdoings to others and although initially petrified to share them with another, found that it wasn’t as difficult as we thought it would be, once you wrote down the worst top ten. These secrets are the emotional and psychic scars of our alcoholic past and they need to be exposed in order for us to fully heal.
- I also think the issues are complicate because alcoholism have some many similarities to GAD, MDD, OCD, and so on.
- I do not necessarily have to react to my feelings of negativity about myself, someone else does not need to experience the consequence of my resentments.
- If this is the case, it’s important that you learn about your needs, in whatever way possible.
- It is the always wanting one more that makes my affective disorder that of addiction and not another disorder.
This is a Judea-Christian belief structure of bad versus good and I believe that I did not join AA to become good but well. AA may have started within the Oxford Group but has gradually moved away from their tenets. It simply means we are spiritually blocked off from the Power of God, which enables us to remain sober, happy, joyous, and free. The disease of alcohol and drug addiction is not just mental and physical but also spiritual. The spiritual malady, however, can be seen as an inward unmanageability.
thoughts on “The Spiritual Malady”
Dismissing others like us for having what we have and acting as we do is like a form of self loathing. We have to forgive ourselves and each other for being ill. Self compassion allows us to be compassionate towards others. I do not necessarily have to react to my feelings of negativity about myself, someone else does not need to experience the consequence of my resentments. Either way, if he could perhaps of had the ability to say this is how exactly I am feeling he could have acted on this emotional information rather than reacted to it. I explained to him that his pride had been hurt, he was in shame and his “apparent” depression every since was simply prolonged self pity.
My step 4 and then 5 showed me that I did not have the natural ability to deal with my negative emotions. Hence when I came into recovery I had hundreds and hundreds of resentments swirling around my mind, poisoning my thoughts and sending constant emotional daggers into my heart.

If you have anything to share about your experience with complicated grief, please comment below. Let others know that they aren’t alone in their suffering. First thing’s first, let’s put aside the religious connotations of prayer (you don’t need to be religious to pray). Secondly, there are many ways of reconnecting with your Soul, but prayer is one of the most simple and immediate paths. And for those experiencing complicated grief, there’s not much energy to do anything else.

Many people who are in need of recovery resist it knowing that the solution is spiritual. The desire to avoid connection with the spiritual aspects of the self are embedded in the nature of addiction. The avoidance of spirituality keeps the addict in addiction long after the desire to return to whole and healthy living is sparked. It is in this essence of anticipation of the future, and what it is imagined to hold, that stops so many from living the purpose they were born to live.
The Full Spectrum of Spirituality
And Naaman said, “Then at least let your servant be given two mule-loads of earth; for your servant will never again offer up burnt offering or sacrifice to any god, except the LORD. But he replied, “As the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will not accept anything.” He pressed him to accept, but he refused.
We are far from being Saints but have a solution Saints would approve and achieve a kind of transient sanctity in this 12 step solution of letting go and letting God. I also impressed upon him that mostly I can manage this emotional spiritual malady dysfunction but often I fail to and get into a resentful anger. I would have had empathy for where the newcomer “was at in his recovery” as I had been there once too. This guy could have been experiencing guilt or shame for example.
In Modern Terms, What is the “Spiritual Malady” of AA?
The 12 steps were influenced by the Oxford Group who said sins cut a person off from God, and that there was such a thing as sin disease. Everyone in recovery has secrets they would rather not disclose, but there are not many “original” sins as one suspects and that haven’t been shared in 12 step recovery.
